JUPITER, FL – December 27, 2017– Ubuntu: An African concept that embodies all the virtues that maintain harmony and the spirit of sharing amongst a community. The term is roughly translated as “I am because we are.”
“What does that phrase have to do with Jupiter,” you may ask? There is a local woman who lives and breathes the Ubuntu movement, Dana Sardano. As an artist, educator, and mother, she became inspired by the message of Ubuntu and traded a lavish lifestyle to dedicate her life to teaching her family and others about the positive concept through art.
Even though she has been an educator for 23 years, Dana’s epiphany to transform her life transpired only two years ago. It all started when Dana asked her husband if he would join her in an art painting class. Politely declining, he offered to buy her arts and crafts and have an evening of painting in the privacy of their own home. In truth, Dana had not picked up a paintbrush since grade school, but once she delicately put the brush to canvas, a part of her unexpectedly came alive.
Using a wide range of colors and styles, Dana pulls inspiration from her surroundings and family
Filled with a fiery passion to create, Dana quit her job as the Director of Student Development at a high school, traded in her Mercedes for a Honda, and moved from Lauderdale by the Sea to a quaint home in Jupiter Farms to pursue her newfound life mission. She believes it was her destiny to instruct a fun, personalized three-hour art class for small groups in her home studio, all while sharing the perspective of how the elements of Ubuntu correlate with art and the community. Dana believes the “The Ubuntu Experience,” as she calls it, can resonate with any type of individual and enlighten positive facets within oneself regardless of your background.
“The Ubuntu Experience” is more than your typical art class where you bring your own food and spirits to have a specific painting torecreate. Rather, Dana opens the door to individuals’ creative minds, allowing them to choose what they would like to paint as a personalized piece while guiding them along the way. She also takes the extra step to put together a full spread of wine and treats for guests to enjoy, as well as personally sealing, wiring, wrapping, and hand delivering each individual piece of art with a small thank you gift.“When people come to my studio, I want them to feel as if they are coming to my home. I want to bring kindness and intimate communication back to society,” explains Dana. “The message of Ubuntu is, ‘The only way I can be happy is when everyone else is happy,’ so if I share my experience with others, then they can pass theirs along too.”
You can find Dana’s artwork at the artesian markets located at Harbourside Place in Jupiter and Old Bridge Park in Lake Worth throughout the season, at Wine Scene Bar in West Palm Beach where pieces of her collection are admired, as well as a mural at St. Luke Catholic School in Palm Springs where she teaches art to children twice a week.
