JUPITER, FL – October 8, 2021 – The InFlorida team talks to the talented actress Sydney Bakich about her leading role on an Amazon Prime movie and why her perseverance is starting to pay off.
IF: You moved to Jupiter, FL a year ago, why?
SB: I was brought up in a small town in central Florida and then moved to New York for eight years. I love NYC and always knew I would live there for a time, but it’s nice to be closer to family again.
IF: Have you always wanted to be an actress?
SB: I have always wanted to act. When I was young, I was really involved in community theatre and used to act, dance, and even play the French horn. I then started modeling and traveled a lot with that. I got to spend time in places like Milan and Mexico City which was amazing. I always knew that I wanted to return to acting.
IF: As we all know the acting game is difficult, but you are also a businesswoman. May you please elaborate?
SB: A few years ago, my fiancé and I started a fashion accessory brand called Snaps. It was hard to step back as you build a business and watch it grow, but it’s doing well so I can now focus on what I’m truly passionate about. When I auditioned for this role, the director had done his research on me and saw the Snaps business. He approached me and said the main character works in fashion, but we hadn’t come up with what the product is, would you be okay if we used it. It was amazing and I really felt this was a perfect step from business into acting.
Shortly after I stepped back from our business, I got an interview with the director of this movie, Sean King. It’s strange how things can happen like that, you manifest and focus, and things can happen. Believe me, I don’t want it to sound easy, acting and auditioning is a process, but so is the right timing. Due to COVID, the auditions were all virtual with the director and producer located in Charlotte, NC but from an LA production company.
IF: What’s this Amazon Prime movie all about?
SB: The movie is called The Wedding Trip and it’s a romantic comedy about a girl and guy who travel to a wedding together. A few years prior, this couple went out on a disastrous blind date. The guy remembers it well but the character I play, Samantha, doesn’t remember in the beginning. The couple doesn’t get on well and they have 3 days on the trip with lots of shenanigans happening along the way. It’s a fun movie and complete escapism from all the seriousness of recent times. It’s great therapy to laugh and hopefully this movie does that for everybody.
IF: Tell us about your co-star in The Wedding Trip?
SB: When I got the script and read my co-star was going to be Bart Blachnio, I was so happy because we had had several acting classes together at Terry Schreiber’s in NYC. In the movie, Bart’s character Jack is a wildlife photographer, and it just so happens that Bart is also an amazing photographer.
IF: Where was The Wedding Trip shot?
SB: The movie was shot mainly around the Charlotte area in North Carolina. We also shot in the Great Smoky Mountains. The crew was looking for a cabin and my family has one in the Maggie Valley, and I mentioned it. They loved it and decided to shoot some scenes there. It was so special to me as my grandfather, father and my uncle built it about thirty years ago and we all still spend time there.
IF: Would you say that the increased amount of tv streaming networks has opened more possibilities for actors?
SB: There is so much good TV right now. I think in the past, TV was thought of as the lesser platform to that of the big screen. Of course, it would be amazing to be on the big screen but there is a lot of creativity and some real diversity going on in the streaming networks, it’s exciting. One of my ambitions is to be a leading lady in one of these big series.
IF: Would you ever move to Hollywood?
SB: Yes, I would if I had an opportunity that required it. I am used to moving and I’m good at adapting to new surroundings.
IF: You have only lived in South Florida for a short time, but do you have any favorite places you like to visit?
SB: In terms of places to eat, there are some amazing restaurants popping up in the Jupiter area. I love Charlie & Joe's at Love Street. I’m not kidding, the Tacklebox sandwiches are the best I have ever tasted. My favorite is the Cubano sandwich.
I love spending time at Juno beach. They have an amazing turtle rescue there which has just been renovated, and the beach itself is beautiful.
As the interview ends, Sydney thanks me for my time. This, and the fact she offered to buy my coffee, is a pure example of how this down to earth actress works. Her unassuming and genuinely unaffected personality is refreshing, and one can’t help but feel her heartfelt ways, passion and pure determination will take her from Jupiter to a star.
