PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL – May 10, 2022 – As the Ukrainian people struggle under horrific conditions their beloved companions are often left shell shocked, abandoned, alone and homeless. With requests for help from overcrowded Ukrainian Shelters housing abandoned pets who are victims of the war Big Dog Ranch Rescue is opening a fully operational rescue near the Ukraine-Poland border. Many dogs were owned by Ukrainians who were killed in the attacks or who were forced to leave in a hurry without their beloved pets. The facility is a former Polish shelter that was not being used. The mission is to house and heal the dogs of war before they are sent to rescues in Sweden, the U.K. and America to be adopted into loving homes. Three staff members including a Veterinarian Technician will man the rescue. Aaron Jackson and Planting Peace have joined forces with Big Dog Ranch Rescue to amplify the rescue efforts.
A truck transporting more dogs from Mariupol will arrive in Medyka Poland on the Ukrainian border during this mission. The dogs will be medically treated and housed in the new rescue.
To facilitate set-up of the new shelter and to oversee the rescue missions BDRR Founder and CEO Lauree Simmons will be flying to the region May 12th and remain in Eastern Europe for 7 days. Simmons says “It’s heartbreaking to see this tragedy unfold for the animals. Much like we respond when national disasters hit we will care for as many dogs as possible and may even reunite Ukrainians who have lost everything with a companion they had to leave behind.”
Big Dog Ranch Rescue has been sending food and supplies to the region for weeks. In addition to opening the rescue and the missions, a shelter in Romania has also requested guidance in handling the tremendous influx of homeless dogs. Simmons will also spend time at that rescue to help them develop and implement best policies for dealing with the war time situation.
