Jupiter Medical Center Explores the Future of Nursing

JUPITER, Fla. – Leaders and administrators at Jupiter Medical Center realize that nurses play a critical role in every patient’s treatment, recovery and ongoing health. As part of the hospital’s strategy to deliver an enhanced patient experience through relationship-based care, Jupiter Medical Center hosted the first annual “State of Nursing” meeting.

On Thursday, February 14, deans and program directors from nursing schools across the region gathered at Jupiter Medical Center for a summit to build the relationship between academic institutions and the practice environment, and to create a blueprint for the future of nursing.

“We need to build a new generation of nurses who are prepared for challenges and have the skills of empathy, critical thinking and resilience,” said Dr. Joanne Miller, Chief Nursing Officer at Jupiter Medical Center. “If we can incorporate teaching these techniques into the curriculum and residency programs, we will create a win for everyone – the patients, the nurses, the medical staff and the hospitals.”

Representatives from South University, Florida Atlantic University, Keiser University and Palm Beach Atlantic University learned about opportunities for their institutions to collaborate with Jupiter Medical Center through its summer extern program, undergraduate and graduate practicums, and adjunct faculty programs. The breakfast meeting also gave program coordinators a chance to discover the caliber of services and staff at Jupiter Medical Center, and hear about advances the hospital has made to provide world-class health care for residents in South Florida.

Jupiter Medical Center’s $300 million Vision. Innovation. Impact. Campaign has allowed the hospital to develop and launch a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the De George Pediatric Unit, and the newly opened James J. Felcyn & Louise Brien Felcyn Observation Unit, as well as plan for future development.

“These expansions not only serve our patients, they also offer recent graduates and established nurses more career choices,” said Dr. Carol Milliken, Director of Excellence in Nursing Professional Practice and Education at Jupiter Medical Center. “Nurses seeking competitive careers at medical centers that offer highly specialized care supported by leading-edge technology, don’t have to look outside of Palm Beach County.”
