MIAMI, FL (August 20, 2019) - The Miami Design District Performance Series returns on Friday, October 18th to Palm Court Plaza with its Friday evening ensemble of live musical performances. Produced by 19-time Grammy© Award-winning producer Emilio Estefan in collaboration with the Miami Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Design District Performance Series is the perfect way to kick off your weekends this fall.
This upcoming season will showcase stellar performances including MISO featuring members from YoungArts, a Halloween 80’s Retro Night featuring Martha Wash (original WeatherGirl) & Shannon, The Wailers, a musical tribute to merengue and salsa with the legendary Johnny Ventura and a Holliday Concert by The Original Dream Girl Jennifer Holliday.
The Performance Series, which first launched in 2017, is greatly celebrated for bringing widely popular and sought after performers into the neighborhood and providing yet another culturally rich experience for the community that is open to the public and free. Beginning on October 18th and running through December 13th, the series is back with highly-acclaimed performers and acts from a variety of genres including the highly esteemed and beloved Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO).
The Miami Design District is a cultural epicenter in South Florida gracefully fusing art, architecture, fashion and design, the Performance Series provides residents an engaging cultural experience and plays a major role in Miami’s cultural fabric. In addition to being a prime shopping and cultural destination, the Miami Design District is also a world-class culinary destination. FALL 2019 ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE
October 18th: MISO featuring members from YoungArts
YoungArts identifies the most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary and performing arts, providing them with creative and professional development opportunities throughout their careers. This year, to kick off the Performance Series, the Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) is partnering with the National YoungArts Foundation for a one-of-a kind performance.
November 1st: 1st Halloween 80’s Retro Night featuring Martha Wash (original WeatherGirl) & Shannon
Rightfully so, American singer-songwriter Martha Wash will be performing at MDD’s 1st Halloween 80’s Retro Night. Known for her distinctive and powerful voice, Martha Wash first achieved fame as part of the duo The Weather Girls with hits like “It’s Raining Men” and C&C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”. She earned the honorific title of The Queen of Clubland after achieving twelve number-one hits on Billboard’s Dance Chart. Shannon is best known for her string of freestyle and dance-pop hits in the 80’s which include “Give Me Tonight”, “Do You Wanna Get Away” and her gold chart-topping anthem, “Let The Music Play.”
November 8th: The Wailers
The legendary Wailers continue their quest to bring reggae to the forefront of the world’s stage as previously led by the late great Bob Marley. Bob’s legacy is carried by renowned bassist and founder Aston “Familyman” Barrett, and joined by original Wailers guitarist Donald Kinsey, The Wailers give audiences around the globe the opportunity to experience their unique sound.
November 15th: MISO
The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO), now in its historic 31st season, is Miami's hometown professional symphony and a valuable contributor to Miami's cultural fabric. Led by MISO Music Director & Conductor Maestro Eduardo Marturet, MISO hosts 80 professional musicians selected from around the world and is a source of growing local pride and support.
November 22nd: A musical tribute to merengue and salsa with the legendary Johnny Ventura
Johnny Ventura is an accomplished Dominican singer and bandleader. Known as the “Elvis of Merengue,” Ventura is one of the most popular artists to rise up in the post-Trujillo era of the Dominican Republic. Ventura created his own orchestra “The Combo Show” which is an important part of the history of Dominican music.
December 13th: A Holliday Concert with The Original Dream Girl, Jennifer Holliday
The American singer and actress started her career on Broadway starring in musicals such as Dreamgirls and Your Arms Too Short to Box with God. Holliday is best known for her role in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls where her iconic performance of the musical number, " And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going”, which then led to her own version of the song catapulted her into national stardom for which she received a Grammy and a Tony Award.
