JUPITER, FL – January 4, 2018 – Everyone is always determined to make New Year’s resolutions that will help them either quit a bad habit, get to the gym, or start a new hobby. What about doing something for yourself and cleaning out that closet that you have been meaning to do for months? I am giving you tips and essentials to keep in mind when taking on this New Year’s closet revamp.
1. The Over-A-Year Rule
If you have had something in your closet for over a year that you have not worn, get rid of it. If you have not had a reason to wear it within a year you most likely won’t next year either.
2. Keep, Sell, Donate
This is one of the most important things that I do when editing a client’s closet. Create three bins that are labeled Keep, Sell and Donate. As simple as it sounds, it will make the process much faster and the clean up much easier.
3. ROYGBIV
This simple acronym from elementary school can help you keep your closet aesthetically pleasing and help it stay organized throughout the year through color coding your wardrobe. (Picture of Color coordinated clothes in closet)
4. Let’s Talk Categories
If you are not crazy about organizing your closet by color, I would definitely suggest at least separating everything into categories. Start with sleeve length in tops and then go into dresses, pants, and so on.
5. Dividers are Divine
For your drawers and folded clothing, dividers are going to be your best friend. Dividers help everything stay in place and help maintain organization.
6. Seasonal Wardrobe
Even if you are in South Florida, it is so important to separate your wardrobe into seasons. Summer/Spring, Fall/Winter. Keep one season packed away and then when the time comes to switch it out, you will feel like you have a whole new closet!
7. Hangers Matter
Slimming felt hangers, which you can find just about anywhere, are crucial when giving your closet a facelift. Not only will they save you space but they will give your closet an easy upgrade.
8. See Your Shoes
Make sure that you have a space, whether it is a shoe rack on the floor, on the back of your door or built-in shelves so that you can see all of your shoes. You are more likely to continue to wear the same pair if all of the others are hiding in boxes.
