Miami, FL - June 14, 2019 - The prominent Art Deco Cardozo Hotel on Miami’s Ocean Drive has been remodeled by its owners Emilio and Gloria Estefan. The Florida Coast Magazine team were privileged to be invited to the ribbon-cutting of this fabulously, stunning hotel, which took place on Wednesday June 12th.
Built in 1939, the Cardozo Hotel was named after Benjamin Cardozo, one of the first Jewish jurors appointed to the US Supreme Court. Cardozo is part of the Art Deco district, recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
Architect Henry Hohauser and Cardozo staged conventional Art Deco features like rounded lines and keystone trim, made of dyed porous limestone.
Gloria Estefan often spent days as a child at South Beach with her family. On one particular trip, a young Gloria was with her Grandfather, and she pointed across the street at the Cardozo Hotel and said, "I am going to buy that hotel one day."
That child’s dream has become a famous star’s reality when the Estefans purchased the hotel in the 90’s. There have been a few refurbishments over the years, but nothing as major as the recent one. Reopening the hotel in 2019, the Cardozo South Beach is a sophisticated, luxurious boutique hotel, which still preserves the essence of the building Gloria prized as a child.
To bring this dream into fruition, the Estefans asked for the help of Benchmark, a global hospitality company to manage Cardozo as part of their hotels & resorts collection.
Star quality just oozes from the new makeover, which is maybe due to the movies shot there, including: A Hole in the Head (1959), Something About Mary (1998) and Any Given Sunday (1999). The hotel has 41 new guest rooms and suites, with the new BiCe Cucina Miami restaurant on the first floor. The decorative, cool colors are accompanied by splashes of bright accents from the Estefan’s own art collection. Some of the other contemporary features comprise of the modern orange chairs in the BiCe Cucina and the upscale chandeliers, which add a touch of class.
This new version of an old classic is bound to attract not only the stars, but all who appreciate great architecture, design and stellar quality with all the trimmings.
